Built where no Route would carry the sound
The Block
DJ Kool Herc works two turntables at a back-to-school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, stretching the breaks. It is widely cited as the birth of hip hop — talent was already there; the way to carry it had to be built.
Own the Route
Talent is everywhere; distribution is captured. The answer then was the same as now — when no one will carry your sound, you build the Route yourself, and keep it in the community's hands.
The Anniversary
Fifty-three years on, we mark hip hop's anniversary in that tradition — a new block party where the Route is member-owned. Food For The Gods is the first Name this network is built to remember.
