About

Sleep is the stage name of Christopher Tafoya, a hip-hop artist raised in New Mexico and based for the past two decades in Portland, Oregon. His own Bandcamp biography describes a childhood "raised between Farmington and Albuquerque," in a family "deeply rooted in music and radio," and says he began rapping at five — though Strange Famous Records puts the start at age nine. After moving to the Pacific Northwest he helped form the group Oraclez Creed and then the sprawling regional collective Oldominion, founded in 1999 and grown past twenty members. A chance meeting with Canadian rapper Josh Martinez at SXSW in 2001 produced The Chicharones, the duo that has carried much of his touring career. His solo run began with *Riot by Candlelight* (2002) and *Christopher* (2005); an approach to Sage Francis for a guest verse instead ended with Sleep signed to Francis's Strange Famous Records, which issued *Hesitation Wounds* (2009) and *Oregon Failure* (2014). What critics consistently fix on is speed. XLR8R's Rob Geary wrote that he "can tear off syllables at a cheetah's pace like Aesop Rock or Busdriver, but even his fastest rhymes make sense". Willamette Week's Reed Jackson, twelve years later, still called the sound "rapid-fire lyricism over drum-slapping beats". He returned in June 2026 with the self-released *SEASONS*.
