On August 11, 1973, Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party in the rec room at
1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to raise money for school clothes. Her brother
Clive — DJ Kool Herc — stopped playing songs and started playing the break, looping
it across two copies of the same record. People who had been dancing for fifteen
seconds a song danced all night. That is where hip hop starts.
Hip Hop Day is August 11. It belongs to the culture, not to us — we just keep the map.
